PMR446 or license-free radios also known as DMR Tier 1 systems, are the simplest and most affordable way to start two-way communication. With no licensing requirements, they’re designed to work out of the box without any setup or training. PMR446 radios however have limited range often restricted to line of sight due to TDRA regulations which limit power output to 0.5W.
License Free radios are ideal for leisure, camping, schools, small construction sites and warehouse opearations.
Why even pay for license when license free radios can do the job ?
Although often advertised with up to 10 km range which is based on ideal conditions such as from hill top with clear line of sight, license-free radios operate at 0.5W and typically could cover about 1 km in open areas.
However, in most cases due to walls, obstructions the range is reduced sometimes to as low as 300mtr making them ineffective for most businesses.
LF Radios also use open frequencies which are prone to interference from other nearby users. For instance a crane operator operating at elevated height can interfere with other users over 2-3kms.
License Free Radios however are ideal for users who need to communicate in short range making them very cost effective.
